Dryer Won’t Start but Has Power — Simple Checks First

When a dryer suddenly won’t start, most people assume: “The dryer is dead.” But in many homes, the fix is surprisingly small.

Start With the Simplest Possibility

1. Door switch failure. Dryers won’t run unless the door switch is pressed. Signs:

  • interior light stays on
  • no sound when pressing start

This is one of the cheapest repairs.

2. Thermal fuse blown

The thermal fuse shuts the dryer off if it overheats.

Common reason it blows:

blocked vent airflow.

Important:

Replacing the fuse without fixing airflow just causes it to blow again.

3. Start switch or timer failure

If nothing happens when pressing start:

  • worn start switch
  • broken timer contacts

These are common in older dryers.

Electrical Supply Check

Some dryers appear to have power because:

  • lights work
  • panel turns on

…but still won’t run due to:

half-tripped breaker.

Reset the breaker fully:

  1. OFF
  2. Then ON

When the Motor Is the Problem

If you hear:

  • humming
  • brief buzz

…the motor may be failing or jammed.

At that point, repair cost matters.

The Bottom Line

Dryers that won’t start are often fixed by:

  • door switch
  • thermal fuse
  • breaker reset

Not a full replacement.

Always check simple things first.
